Collaboration v. Rolling Solo

I personally enjoy both aspects, it was super fun to work in a group and have everyone’s ideas incorporated and try to find a balance where all our ideas fit as one. It’s even more enjoyable to be working on my own comic because I already know what I want to do. Windsor McCay, Frank King, George Herriman, Hergé, Jackie Ormes, OsamuTezuka, Yoshihiro Tatsumi, or Jacques Tardi would have benefited from collaboration because of the different visions and the opportunity to bounce off ideas from one another. In working as a collaborative it can succeed and make the process easy if the main character has an alter ego. Than each cartoonist can shape him or her to their standing but still staying on track to the storyline. While the multiplicity of hands would’ve added more dynamic and a different feel from each cartoonist; the sole artistic process is enjoyable because you can express how you feel and what you want the character/s to feel versus having to discuss the entire process/ illustration before hand. It’s more liberating versus feeling restrained to a certain idea. In collaborating with individuals it can prolong the process due to conflicts on coming to an agreement. But, overall whether a comic is a collaboration or not, it all depends on the communication and language amongst the cartoonist. The better they communicate the better they will execute the cartoon.
