Looking back through many of the posts people contributed to
our week covering the original Batman comics, I’m finding that there’s a lot of
confusion over some of the situations Bats gets himself into and the actions he
makes in kind. Driving a sporty red convertible in the batsuit? What? Seeking
advice from LSD flower heads? Seriously? My question is: did anyone see that
issue where he fights vampires? What
the hell even is that?? There’s NO DISCERNABLE EXPLENATION for why Bruce Wayne
and his fiancé Julie end up deep in the “Carlathan” Mountains of Hungary (other than, pretty much, “that’s
where the Monk lives”), or why he’s
fighting straight-up, no-bullshit vampires. Like, not escaped convicts-turned-bloodthirsty
nocturnal mutants a la runaway chemical spill, or Satanists with crazed
ritualistic inclinations, but actual vampires. Complete with fangs and
telepathic/hypnotic/transfigurative powers. This, beyond everything else in
these first issues, is what truly astounds me. I mean, the dude’s basically Van
Helsing in this one. Batman the International Vampire Hunter: Battler of the
Supernatural, Champion of the House of the Lord. Someone wrote about religious
symbolism in Miller’s DKR and I think
if there’s anything from the originals that you could use to show where he may have
drawn his inspiration from, it’s got to be this. Right? I don’t know, it’s just
seems so far outside of where I’d ever picture Batman to be in his fight
against crime. This tale just strikes me as less of a fight between the just
and the unjust and more a battle between the forces of good and evil on a
Biblical scale.
