Scenic

There is an interesting dynamic in Tardi's comics that we touched on briefly during class on Tuesday.  There are very beautiful panorama scenes sprinkled throughout his comics.  But there are also panels that consist of one gigantic speech bubble and the speakers face pushed down to the bottom of the panel.  I find Tardi's style very interesting.  On one hand, we get these huge expansive panels that give us a feel for the city and help to create the French atmosphere that Tardi is looking for.  On the other, we get panels with no more than a face and text.
I personally like this style. There are panels that consist almost completely of text but during these conversations we don't really need to be reminded of the setting.  Almost without fail, at the top or the bottom of that page will be a larger panel devoted to depicting some part of the city.  This constant transitioning between huge amounts of text and almost text within a panel is fairly different from the comics that we have seen before.
