Convoluted

My first reading of "Torchy Brown" from the 30's proved difficult, as I found the panels to be very convoluted. Some of the panels were very detailed, but since they were in black and white I think it drew my eye in a lot of places at once. I think in many instances I found it difficult to form the closure as a reader. The handwritten dialogue was at times difficult to read as well. Overall I found myself working a lot harder to read the early "Torchy Brown" than I have with the comics we have read thus far this semester. The "Torchy Brown" from the 50's was easier to read. The color helped, and it in general seemed more organized. It is easy to see Ormes' evolution as an artist through these two iterations of "Torchy Brown".

  1. Agree. Thought that as she developed more as an artist and writer her work became more refined. The color definitely helped but much of her writing was easier to follow as well.
