Humans- are we a good thing or not?

The first thing that comes to mind reading the mysterious underground men is the rabbit, whom I consider the main character. I am reminded of Tin Tin and the sidekick Snowy, and I have to say reading the mysterious underground men, this is what I wanted Snowy to be and more- complex, intelligent, and useful, yet innocent, naive, and unconfident. What I found interesting about osamu tezuka's comic was that although the story was quite short, it was an interesting read, and dealt with what exactly it means to be human. Both the rabbit and the termite people dress up as people, and both are smarter than humans; yet it is when the two non-humans show their brilliance that humans think that they are, perhaps, equals.

Yes humans can do all this.
I wonder what exactly osamu tezuka was trying to do by making both the rabbit and the termite people envious of human life; yet also acknowledging their hubris, and stupidity. In the end, the rabbit gets his acknowledgement that he is human; yet I can't help remembering that the humans in the end did nothing to stop their destruction, and the termite people's deaths are remarkably similar to the atomic bomb. Hmmm....
