Use of exclamation marks!

Unlike Tintin, The Superman Chronicles is very content heavy, while lacking details and specifics in its graphics. For example, compared to Tintin, the lines and colors in Superman are not very clear and vivid, but the captions explain the scenes very well. Furthermore, time progresses fairly quickly between the panels, so the progression of actions are not conveyed in details.

However, Siegel seems to comprise this lack of graphic details through the use of exclamation marks; most of his sentences end with an exclamation mark. This relates back to our class discussion on last Thursday about the use of exclamation mark vs. use of gasps.

In Superman Chronicles, Siegel chooses to use “!” over the gasp, because “!” seems to be more inclusive and have a greater effect in conveying the sensory aspects of the sentences in a short period of time. In addition, it seems to me that using an exclamation mark instead of a period makes the story less boring and more lively. However, due to Siegel’s overuse of exclamation marks in his sentences, the exclamation mark does not seem to have the emphasis effect when it is used. Therefore, Siegel implements another way of adding emphasis to his sentences - underlining. I personally thought that it was interesting to see the different usages of "!" and gasps in Superman Chronicles and Tintin.
